Who Are We?

MAEC is a group of local Christian churches in Southeastern Connecticut working
together to bring the compassion of Christ to those in need, through advocacy,
service, celebration, and fellowship.

What do we do?

We walk twice a year, on Good Friday and in October, to alleviate hunger.
The Good Friday Walk raises money to feed those in need in our communities. In
2026, 28 people did the walk along River Road, stopped at stations of the cross,
and raised $3,780. Checks for $500 each were sent to six local agencies that serve
our area. The balance was then donated to the relief effort for the 42 persons
who were displaced by a terrible fire in Groton.

MAEC joins with Church World Services (CWS) every year to help fight hunger
around the world. In 2025, about 35 walkers trekked from downtown Mystic to
Noank and back, raising almost $6000 in the annual CROP Hunger Walk. CWS
returned $1415 of that total for our use locally. In 2026, we will be celebrating 50
years of participation in the CROP Walk.

We offer a year-round Care and Share program which provides gas and food gift
cards to people who need assistance in the towns of Groton, Mystic, Stonington,
North Stonington, and Pawcatuck. Referrals to this program come from our
member churches, the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center, and Human Services
Agencies.

At our June meeting we present the annual Neil and Pat Kluepfel Community
Service Award. This award is given to an individual who has demonstrated
exceptional service to their community. In 2026 the award was given to Mike
Hewitt, Noank, Retired U.S. Navy Captain. A $200 check was given in his honor to
support the USS Groton Sail Monument.

Every July we fund a lunch program at St. Luc School in Mercery, Haiti. The lunch
program serves over 300 students.
